Mark is a registered Gestalt Counsellor and Psychotherapist. He has worked for Lifeline, in Men’s Residential Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation and a Private Sector Mental Health Program.

Mark’s Story

I started my Counselling career in 2003 as a Lifeline telephone counsellor, then worked in a residential drug and alcohol rehabilitation program for men; in a private mental health in-patient/ out-patient program supporting men and women who were struggling with addictions and a variety of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, grief and post-traumatic stress.

Having studied several counselling methods, I bring a range of skills and experience when working with clients. Central to my belief is that we all have the inner wisdom to resolve our own life struggles, however, as men we often get in our own way believing we must go it alone. This thinking sets us up for isolation and withdrawal from the ones we love. Getting support is key when confronted with life challenges but for most men this is an alien concept because we have been taught from a young age to be strong, don’t cry and be a man. Unfortunately, these messages keep us from the very support we need.

My own experience of counselling was after several life changing incidents all occurred in quick succession. I didn’t have the internal resources or external support to cope and found myself isolated and not knowing which way to turn. I was too ashamed to talk about what was happening and didn’t even know where to begin.

These defining moments are part of my life’s journey and were a catalyst for change. I knew I needed help but found myself thinking I should “just get on with it” and continue as I’d always done. The problem with “doing what I’d always done” was that nothing was going to change. I needed to do something different and didn’t know where to begin. The result was the decision to see a counsellor and my life took a 180 from that point onwards. I liken Counselling and Psychotherapy to the road less travelled, where as previously I had been on the freeway, trying to keep up to the car in front and ahead of the semi-trailer behind, I was now able to enjoy the ride, take in the scenery and travel at my own speed. Counselling has changed my life, and for the better. Although at times I wondered if the pain would ever stop, I now know that I grow through the process and come out the other side a better version of me.

Because I have done a variety of jobs in my working life, over several different industries and professions, I bring life skills and experience to the counselling session – not just text books and theory. In my counselling sessions, I consider the whole person – mind, body, spirit and emotion are all equally important so that we can openly discuss whatever is happening for you in the present moment.

I know I am lucky to have found a profession I am passionate about and one which has the potential to change lives. With that also comes the responsibility to always be where you are, following your agenda for your session and respecting your intuition, wisdom and knowledge.

I adhere to the ethical guidelines of counselling and am a member of the peak governing body of Gestalt practitioner.

I look forward to working with you and hearing your story.

Seeing him not only gave me fantastic support at a difficult time, but at last I feel like I am in the driver’s seat in my life and my business. Harley has a natural and intuitive approach, and seems to draw from a great depth of technique and experience in his work. I would recommend him unreservedly for this kind of work. Thanks for your amazing help and support during this time!"
