Separation and Divorce Men’s Group

(Please note that this group is not currently running)

If you are going through a separation or divorce, a men’s support group can help you through the vast emotional roller coaster and infinite challenges that you may be experiencing.

  • Are you struggling to come to terms with the enormous changes in your life?
  • Do you find yourself being emotionally triggered by what your ex-partner does?
  • If you have kids, are you dealing with not seeing them as often as you would like?
  • Are you feeling that there is an imbalance of power with your ex-partner?
  • Do you feel like you have lost almost everything important in your life?

A Men’s Group facilitated by an experienced professional can help.

Watch this next video to find out more about why Menstuff is running this group:

Feel free to review the Sunday Telegraph Article (click here) on a men’s group that Harley previously co-facilitated. Please note that the reference to taking off shoes and sitting on mattresses is not relevant for the Separation and Divorce Men’s Group.

Maybe you can relate to some of the following:

  • Your life feels so heavy at the moment. It’s hard to be positive about anything
  • If you have kids, you feel that your relationship with them is being negatively affected, or that you might lose them completely
  • You feel angry that your ex-partner doesn’t seem to even listen to what you have to say
  • You feel frustrated by how long the process of separation or divorce is taking
  • You feel powerless
  • You feel ashamed by some of the things that you have said or done
  • You are confused about what to do next
  • You worry that you might land up alone and lonely
  • You feel concerned that if anything else were to go wrong in your life you wouldn’t be able to cope

If you can relate to some, or all, of these things, you are not alone. Maybe a men’s support group can help.

What are Men’s Groups?

Men’s groups can be extremely powerful ways to support men to transform their lives.

Men’s groups aren’t there to ‘fix’ you or your situation. One of the reasons for this is that they don’t work on the basis that you are ‘broken’ and need fixing. It is through the sharing of stories and experiences, and learning new tips and techniques, that men can often provide each other with insights and new ways of looking at aspects of their lives. The interactions with other people in the group, and with the facilitator, are also central to this process.

A professionally facilitated men’s group provides you with an opportunity to share your experiences with other men, and to hear what other men may be experiencing, all within in a safe environment. A safe environment is one that includes having a clear mutual respect and confidentiality framework.

How the Separation and Divorce Men’s Group works:

  • There will be a maximum of 8 men in the group, plus the facilitator.
  • Groups will usually be held on a weekly basis.
  • If there is space you may join the group at any time.
  • Your initial commitment is for one month.
  • The group works within a confidentiality framework – which will be discussed whenever someone new joins the group
  • The benefits you receive from the group will largely be related to your level of participation in the group, which includes giving and receiving feedback.
  • You always get to choose your own level of participation. You don’t have to say or do anything that doesn’t feel right for you

A support group is a powerful resource for men going through a significant life transition, and is effective in empowering men to begin to learn to re-create happy  and meaningful lives.

Through participation in the Men’s Separation and Divorce Group you can:

  • Experience what it is like to receive support through your separation or divorce, and realise that you don’t have to do it all on your own
  • Learn how to communicate more effectively with those around you and also with your ex-partner
  • Understand more about why you may react or get ‘triggered’ by interactions with your ex-partner, and learn tools to begin to allow you to respond differently
  • Have a greater sense of clarity about separation and divorce processes and institutions (eg. Courts/mediators) by listening to other men’s experiences
  • Begin to understand the power dynamics that occur during a separation or divorce, and start to feel more empowered
  • Explore what kind of relationship you’d like to have with your children and take steps towards achieving this
  • Feel less stressed and greater confidence about connecting with other men and having ‘real’ conversations
  • Learn how to deepen your relationship with other men … beyond ‘pub talk’
